Welcome to PAWD: Pick Anime, Watch, Discuss! We are a small group of anime fans who have formed an online anime club for watching and discussing a variety of different anime series.
This group is members only. If you think you might be interested, please contact either ashi or mastressalita and tell us a little bit about yourself and why you might like to join. Alternatively, you can find us in a small IRC chatroom @ irc.rizon.net #anime_discuss.
Every two weeks, a club member will get to pick out an anime for the club to watch. It can be something they have seen before, something they haven't and are simply curious about, and of any genre, length, and format they like. The only requirement is the anime has to be available subtitled in English and cannot be for 18+ audiences (hentai). Members will have two weeks to watch a reasonable amount of the show (around two hours or so, which is four episodes for a standard TV series) and discuss it with each other via LiveJournal comments.
Everyone is encouraged to try out every club pick, even if the show doesn't look like their "cup of tea." If a member has already seen the show that has been picked, they can opt to rewatch it with the club or simply discuss it with other members from their memory. No member is obligated to finish a show past the first four episodes, but those members that have enjoyed the series and wish to finish it may do so on their own. Members who opt to finish the series on their own are encouraged to continue discussing the series on the original club pick topic. Also, if a member is unable to watch the first four episodes of the show during its weeks, they are still encouraged to do so at a later date if they wish.
At the end of the two week date bracket for a pick, another member will then make a pick of their own. This way all members get an equal share in picking out different titles for the club to watch. The next anime pick should be posted to the LiveJournal by Wednesday of the week preceeding the club viewing of that title, to ensure that everyone has ample time to get the show in advance. If it is a member's turn and they do not put up a pick, their turn will be forfeited and the next person on the list will be asked to choose instead. Members may opt to skip their turn or trade the scheduled turn with another member if they wish, so long as they let ashi or mastressalita know.
Currently turn order is determined by join date and all new members will get to pick once upon joining the group. After that, however, any member who rarely or never participates in the LiveJournal discussions will lose their turn to pick until their activity improves. Currently the minimum amount of activity to maintain your turn to pick is at least two LiveJournal postings during the time between your last posted pick and your next turn. If a member has no LiveJournal activity for three consecutive months, they will be set to inactive. If a member has no LiveJournal activity for a year, they will be removed from the club.
Groupwatches are "realtime" anime viewings scheduled at a certain date and time. They are optional, and members who wish to participate will meet in the club IRC channel, #anime_discuss on server irc.rizon.net at the scheduled time. They are expected to have the scheduled viewing title file ready in advance. The channel bot Silvie has a !groupwatch command which will execute a countdown, and on "IKE!" everyone starts their file; members then provide a live commentary in the channel as they watch. Some Groupwatches will be scheduled well in advance, others may be scheduled in the channel on short notice. If Groupwatches are something that interest you, being a regular in the IRC channel is the best way to keep up to date!
Bad Anime Challenge
This is an extra anime pick done for fun. Unlike the regular club picks, hentai and English dubs are allowed for the Bad Anime Challenge (but please keep any artwork used on the club posting work-safe). The Bad Anime Challenge allows a member to pick an anime that either they have heard is notoriously bad, or they have watched before and was of the opinion it was terrible, and then challenge other members to watch it as well and discuss it. Why? Because misery loves company, that's why!
Sad Anime Challenge
Like the Bad Anime Challenge, Sad Anime Challenges are an extra anime pick done for fun. The Sad Anime Challenge allows a member to pick an anime that either they have heard is notoriously sad, or they have watched before and was of the opinion it was a real tearjerker, and then challenge other members to watch it as well and discuss it. Make sure to have your tissues handy!
Weird Anime Challenge
The Weird Anime Challenge is another extra anime pick done for fun. The Weird Anime Challenge allows a member to pick an anime that either they have heard is notoriously strange -- by either having a really off-the-wall premise or simply being extremely surreal -- or that they have watched before and was of the opinion it was a real mindfuck, and then challenge other members to watch it as well and discuss it. Be prepared for strange imagery, head-scratching premises, and overall impressions of "What the fuck did I just watch?"
Anime Drinking Game
This is another "extra" to the regular club anime picks that is simply for fun. A member chooses an anime and a set of drinking game rules, such as "Take a drink every time Character X does a crazy laugh." You can create as many rules for your drinking game as you like, but please try to keep it as simple as possible (in my experience, the fewer rules you make, the easier it is to remember them, so put a little thought into what will be the most effective!) Though the idea behind a drinking game is to use alcohol, members do not have to be alcohol drinkers: they may partake of the challenge using any drink or snack of choice, if they like! New drinking games may be posted by anyone and have no set schedule to complete the challenge.
Any member may write and post reviews! Reviews may be posted at any time, do not have to follow any specific format, and may be for anything that is related to "anime otaku" culture. Therefore reviews of anime, manga, live action Japanese dramas or films, Japanese music artists, Japanese video games, and even things related to such fandoms such as reviews of fanart or fanfiction are welcome! Please place any images and the bulk of the text to the review behind an LJ-Cut, and keep any artwork used to spruce up the review work-safe.
Any member may start a new discussion topic, and it is highly encouraged that other members take the time to participate in the discussion via comments. Discussion topics may be posted at any time, and can really be about whatever you like, so long as the topic is somehow related to "anime otaku" culture and isn't too specific (such as posing a question about a specific series that has not been picked as a club watch yet). Examples of possible discussion topics include: "How did you get into anime?"; "What are some of your favorite nostalgic shows?"; "What are your thoughts of the new anime this season?"; "What do you think of anime figurines?"; "Mecha or mahou shoujo?" etc.
It is an age of unlockable achievements, and this anime club is no exception! Some achievements are available at any time, while others may be for a limited time and rewarded for the successful completion of club challenges. Those who obtain achievements will get an "Achievement Unlocked" banner that they can put on their MAL profiles, blogs, or wherever else they like! If you have an idea for an unlockable achievement challenge, please let ashi or mastressalita know!
The Overachiever Yearly Challenge: This prestigious achievement is available to those that have completed a) all weekly club viewing picks issued over the club for a year (by watching at least four episodes of the anime or more and commenting on it on the appropriate club viewing thread) b) all Bad/Sad/Weird Anime Challenges issued over the club for a year (by watching the anime and commenting on it on the challenge thread) c) leave a comment on all discussion topic threads issued over the club for a year and d) participate in each monthly challenge by watching at least one anime that completes the challenge and posting a comment on the challenge thread. Don't just be a member... be an overachiever!
The Super Member Yearly Challenge: Complete all weekly club viewing picks issued over the club for a year (by watching at least four episodes of the anime or more and commenting on it on the appropriate club viewing thread... yes, you need to comment on your own picks too!) and receive an "achievement unlocked" banner!
The Active Member Yearly Challenge: Any member who is with the club for a full year and remains active during the entire duration (defined by the member never being set to "inactive" status after three consecutive months of no LiveJournal activity) will receive an "achievement unlocked" banner!
The Bad Anime Yearly Challenge: Complete all Bad Anime Challenges issued over the club for a year (by watching the anime and commenting on it on the challenge thread) and receive an "achievement unlocked" banner!
The Sad Anime Yearly Challenge: Complete all Sad Anime Challenges issued over the club for a year (by watching the anime and commenting on it on the challenge thread) and receive an "achievement unlocked" banner!
The Weird Anime Yearly Challenge: Complete all Weird Anime Challenges issued over the club for a year (by watching the anime and commenting on it on the challenge thread) and receive an "achievement unlocked" banner!
The 100 Episode Challenge: Complete any anime series that is 100 episodes or more within a single month, and recieve an "achievement unlocked" banner! This challenge is always open and rewarded off the honor system: if you complete a 100+ episode anime series within one month (31 days), let mastressalita know the series title and she will make you an "achievement unlocked" banner to celebrate the occassion!
Hotpot Challenge: This year our monthly challenge game is Anime Hotpot! Each month members will be presented with five different "ingredients" and are tasked with completing an approved otaku-related activity featuring said ingredient. Achievements come in many different flavors: completing a single ingredient for the month, completing all ingredients for the month, and participating every month for the entire year! There is also a bit of a treasure-hunt component involved: if someone can find an anime that features all five of the monthly ingredients, they will receive a special achievement banner!
The achievement list is as follows:
-For completing an ingredient in a single month, you will receive an achievement banner for that ingredient!
-For completing ALL FIVE ingredients in a single month, you will receive an additional achievement banner!
-For participating in all twelve Hotpot Challenges for the year, you will receive an achievement banner!
-For completing EVERY INGREDIENT in all twelve Hotpot Challenges for the year, you will receive an additional achievement banner!
-Anyone who manages to complete a single series that uses all five ingredients for a given month will receive a special achievement banner! This achievement may not be possible to win for a given month, depending on what ingredients were selected at random. Since this achievement is based on the "treasure hunt" aspect of finding a single series that fits all five randomized criteria, only the FIRST PERSON who completes it and leaves a comment will win the award. Someone else may win the award for the month only if they find a DIFFERENT series that also fits all five of the randomized criteria.
-The one person who watches the most anime or Japanese live action series over the course of the Hotpot Challenges will receive a special achievement banner! This will be calculated based on the total runtime watched.
-The one person who reads the most manga or light novels over the course of the Hotpot Challenges will receive a special achievement banner! This will be calculated based on total number of completed volumes read.
-The one person who plays the most visual novels over the course of the Hotpot Challenges will receive a special achievement banner! This will be calculated based on total number of completed routes played.
-If the same individual wins the "watches the most anime or Japanese live action series," "reads the most manga or light novels," AND "plays the most visual novels" awards, they will be awarded a special achievement!
Posting and Tagging
Since one of your friendly club moderators is a librarian, she'd prefer that posted topics have some uniformity in the subject line and include tags to make it easy to navigate through posts.
Subject lines list what the posting is (Anime Pick, Bad Anime Challenge, Anime Drinking Game, Review) followed by a colon and then the name of the anime, and if applicable, the date bracket of the club pick or challenge. Discussion threads should be labeled as Discussion followed by a colon and then the discussion topic.
Anime Pick: The Slayers, 3/11/13 - 3/17/13 Bad Anime Challenge: Pure Love, 9/23/12 - 9/30/12 Anime Drinking Game: Keroro Gunsou "Gunpla" Drinking Game Challenge! Review: Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney) Live-Action Movie Discussion: What do you think of the "moe" anime craze?
When you post a new topic, you may include tags to help members sort club postings. All members should be able to use existing tags (club viewing, bad anime challenge, etc.) and add new tags (such as series: tags), but please be aware that tags may be added or modified as needed by a group moderator.
